Angel-A

Angel aAngel-A
On a whim I decided to check this movie out. I’ve never heard anything of it before stumbling across it on Netflix, mostly incredible because it’s a Luc Besson movie - and I dig his stuff. The trailer was bizarre yet intriguing. AndrĂ© is a mess of a man - owes money to scumbags, can’t tell the truth to save his life, and has a hard time getting straight. So after being threatened irreparable bodily harm (and probable death) from his thug borrowers, he decides to jump off a bridge. There he meets Angela. The movie is black and white and has a strange ethereal quality to it. There are a whole bunch of plot-holes, some bad acting, but the heart of the movie is good. I didn’t quite agree with the ending - but if you watch it, IM me and I’ll tell you why. It’s sort of a twisted “it’s a wonderful life” without the whole revisit-jimmy-stewarts-life thing… and Clarence is a six foot sexy bitch. This weekend I was depressed and was wanting to jump off a bridge too - funny how things just seem to pop up like a mirror. There are several beautiful scenes that are worth the rental. I’m actually considering buying this (damn eventual Blu-Ray upgrade - I’ll have to wait). I’m going to have to create a movies category in the sidebar…

Facebook Graffiti

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

Here are some images that I’ve drawn with Graffiti, an application on my Facebook page. I’ve been liking Facebook a little more now that I’ve been able to get it connected with this site (and the twitter connection is cool). Graffiti, however, is maddening because it is a really limited drawing app. You have a round brush with variable width, a color (using hex values, but displaying 256 colors), and opacity. You have a set canvas size that you cannot zoom into, so your marks are pretty much at the mercy of a steady hand… Oh well, it’s still fun - and it help me practice my color shading. You can even watch how I drew the picture as it plays back my brush strokes.

Sketches from My Vacation

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

Just a few sketches I did while on vacation. I have tons more, but I need to scan them in. I have to remember next time to either bring my wacom tablet with me, or my portable scanner… I’d also like to point out that I’ve put covers on certain bits to comply with Flickr’s upload policy - I didn’t even chance it with posting these on MySpace or Facebook.

I Heart Stevie Ryan

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

So I stumbled across one of her films a while ago on YouTube. She’s the actress/comedienne/personality chick that I keep tabs on through MySpace and other places. She has a new other place, that I’d like to share - her new personal website on Uber. I can watch her for hours @_@ - and I also emailed her a wedding proposal… hey, I’ve already been struck by lightning - so don’t talk to me about odds.

The First Good Girl Sketch

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

It’s actually done in a Tuscan Red Col-Erase pencil, but looks better black after I scan it in. I still need to work on hands. They’re unbelievably hard. I almost erased a hole into the paper. I guess that’s what sketchbooks are for though. I might color this one later…

New Sketchbooks

Monday, March 17th, 2008

I’ve started two new sketchbooks - one is going to be mostly cheesecake and pin-up girls, the other is going to be darker screwed up shit. I’ve already made a title page for the latter…

The Col-Erase pencils I ordered are real nice. I’ve also ordered some more sketchbooks of artists that I admire, so I can learn from them. Of course, nothing beats the real thing; I am accepting submissions for nude female models. Why not?

It’s been over 2 weeks since I’ve had a smoke. I’m holding up pretty well. I’ve been hacking up ungodly amounts of lung-butter though. A word to the wise for those kids who think smoking would be cool - yesterday I hacked up something that looked remarkably like a piece of my brain. Sleep tight.

Sl’hore Transformers

I continue to see these ads. Really? Go from office bimbo to club slag in 5 seconds without having to visit a bathroom stall? Genius.

3 Movies in March

Monster Squad
I think I’ve only seen this movie once when it was released in the 80’s. I probably saw it on cable or VHS at the time. I really don’t remember it except for some of the lines (”Wolfman got nards…”). This was a good treat, being released on DVD for the first time in 2007. I was surprised that the cinematography on it was so nice (the widescreen helped too) and some of the effects were tight (Stan Winston did a few of the effects including the Gill-man and Frankenstein make-up). The rest of the movie is forgettable and a lot of it doesn’t really make sense. I am waiting for the director’s other movie, Night of the Creeps make it to DVD.

Night of the Comet
Wow, this movie is really bad. It probably could have used more zombies. Why don’t they remake this one? It had a great premise, but blew it. The worst of it, however, is the god-awful 80’s pop that drenches the movie. Not good 80’s pop, but brain-melting pop that was written for the movie with some guy with a keyboard and a rhyming dictionary.

This Film Is Not Yet Rated
A entertaining documentary about how the MPAA rates movies inter-cut with lots of thrusting and oral sex (cuts from movies that got screwed by the MPAA). While not pedantic, the doc did seem to enjoy itself way too much in exposing the members of the MPAA ratings board - like a stupid college prank.

Next up: Angel-A, Wolf Creek, and Darkness Falls
