Here is a brief character rundown of the first two Lost episodes of season 5, “Because You Left” and “The Lie”:
Marvin Candle – Okay, he knows a lot about the island’s powers. He also talked briefly about the Arrow Station and it being a place to run strategic missions against the hostiles. It was also clear that he stopped the tunneling to the Donkey Wheel of Time. When it’s clear that a tunnel was constructed from the Orchid station. Is it Daniel that finishes the job? The drill bit melted while drilling – does Marvin lose his arm by getting too close to the island’s magic sparklies? Or will we see what “incident” caused the passage way to the Swan Station concreted off? Hey, do you think that the Lostaways are skipping in around in Time every 108 minutes?
Daniel Faraday – Desmond is his constant. This we know. My question is that Desmond was in the hatch for three years with Kelvin. Kelvin was killed at the same time flight 815 crashed. So was Desmond alone in the hatch when Daniel knocked? If so, does that mean the newly crashed survivors are up the beach? Hopefully we’ll get a better sense of exactly when the time skips are taking them. 3 years forward, 3 years back? But it looks like Sawyer and Juliet are attacked by soldiers in very old uniforms. Like 1930′s. Yeah, and I’m almost certain that Ms. Hawkings is Daniel’s mother. But she’s in LA, and Desmond is on his way to Oxford.
Jack – Jack really doesn’t do much in these two episodes except be all emo about how miserable he is. I wonder if they are going to continue with his drug problem.
Hurley – Poor Hurley. He’s such a good person that he can’t live with the Lie. He also makes two mistakes that will cause problems. First he listens to what Sayid said earlier, and runs from Ben, AND gets nabbed by the cops – something that dead Ana Lucia said NOT TO DO. Second, he blabs the entire true story to his mother – and a consequence of this is that his parents are probably good as dead. He should also probably work on his Hot Pocket Kung Fu.
Kate – Kate is back to what she does best – running away. I think that Claire’s mother, Aaron’s grandmother, is trying to get back Aaron – tipped off by Ben. He probably knows that putting pressure on Kate will force her to return to the island.
Locke – You think that Richard would have given the heads up to Locke before the island started skipping. As a supposed leader of the island, shouldn’t he be the first one to know what the hell is going on?? And Richard gives him the same compass that Richard showed Locke when Locke was a little boy. Anybody else catch that?
Sun – Sun has her hate on. It’s hard to tell if she’s telling Widmore the truth. She obviously blames someone for Jin’s death. Something wasn’t right when she was talking to Kate. It’s already established that Sun is a liar on many occasion. I guess only time will tell. And would her baby daughter have to return to the island?
Ben – Ben is being a dick again. I’d like to know his true motives for getting the Oceanic Six back to the island. It looks like he’s getting help by a few people, but we do not know who these people are or what they’re doing off the island (or whether or not they’re actually from the island). Theory: That box that Ben pulls from the Hotel’s vent is filled with Medusa Spiders – the same venom that was used in the darts that were used on Sayid. I assume that was Jeffery and Gabriel that were killed by Sayid, the same two that Jill told Ben were fine (a lie?).
Sayid – Probably the most humorous part of these two episodes, Sayid pulls a “Weekend at Bernies” and plays paralyzed throughout both episodes. Again, Medusa spider. Those that need to return, may not go willingly.
Ms. Hawkings – This was a pretty good shocker. The return of Ms. Hawkings. Her last name isn’t a coincidence. Seems like she can write out complex equations on Faraday level. I’d like to know exactly who she is and what’s her role in all this. Obviously she has good knowledge of what’s going on and can appear in other people’s past (Desmond) like Richard did with Locke.
Sawyer and Juliet – Shirtless Sawyer is not a happy camper. Not a lot happened to these two, other than they experience some wrinkles in time. We are left with them being attacked by some 1930-40′s era soldiers, lead by some british punk named Jones. Most of the soldiers were taken out by Locke, but I think Jones is just knocked out by Juliet.
Charlotte – I hope we get her back story before her brain melts.
Miles – Here’s a strange theory. What if Marvin Candle’s child, shown at the very beginning of the first episode, was actually Miles? I enjoy his character, and hope they expand his role.
Frogurt – Well, he got some fire, didn’t he? And the red shirt was a nice touch. That’s how you treat a “non-starring” survivor.
Desmond and Penny – Okay, so we know that when a “change” occurs in time, it literally comes to the person at a later date. But why does Desmond suddenly remember this happening at this point in time? And do you think that Desmond tells Penny about his romp through time?
Widmore – I think Widmore was the previous leader of the island, before Ben. He didn’t have a lot to do with DHARMA, and was probably the one who ordered the killing of the entire DHARMA population on the island. There was probably a power struggle between Ben and Widmore, in which, somehow, Widmore was kicked off the island. But this doesn’t jive with the existence of Penny, who’s in her thirties, at least. When was Widmore on the island? Back in the 1940′s? Was he part of the troops that came to the island. We know he has some military background (from his speech to Desmond when Des was trying to get a job). Is he the bad guy? Or is Ben? Or are both of them bad guys?… Ow, my head.
The voice speaking to Pierre Chang (Marvin Candle) is undoubtedly Faraday’s.
We were treated to two episodes of Lost last night – together they made the two hour season premiere. There is a lot to cover, so this post will be light until I’m able to grab the episodes on iTunes today and rewatch them a few more times and take notes.
I have a quick theory that a co-worker inadvertantly came up with: Mrs. Hawkings (previously seen during Desmond’s “Flashes Before Your Eyes”, in which she tells him he can’t marry Penny after he time-travels after the Swan Hatch implosion), is Daniel Faraday’s mother. Who else can jot out equations such as those?
Oh, and Ana Lucia told Hurley to STAY AWAY from the police. Big dummy.
Continuing Lost characters in Sketchbook. These were done on my intuos tablet at home, hence the crisper lines. I also hook my laptop up to a 22″ monitor.
Ben, Locke, and Hurley. I want to sketch Charlie, Juliet, Sayid and some others, but I need to figure out proper grouping of three’s.
My holiday vacation involved watching all the seasons. All of them.
The Hostiles – Here’s a theory: What if the hostiles that were talked about in the Ben flashback (the one where he is a little boy in DHARMA) are actually the survivors of flight 815 that have been sent back in time when the island moved. Also, this might explain who the Others really are – they are people trapped on the island that have been moved back in time. Just a thought.
The Tempest Station – So, Harper warned Juliet that Faraday and Charlotte where going to release the gas from the Tempest station and kill everybody on the island. This was obviously the way the Hostiles killed the DHARMA Initiative at 4:00 pm in Ben’s flashback. Two points here. Harper said that Ben sent her, and wanted Juliet to kill Faraday and Charlotte. Ben didn’t send Harper – because he and his daughter would have died from the gas. Harper is probably an island spirit – due to her quick departure – so I would guess the island wanted everyone dead. The other point is how did Faraday and Charlotte know that the Tempest was about to kill everybody? It seemed really last minute that they took off. And who set the Tempest time-bomb in motion?
The Arrow Station – What was the purpose of this hatch? Does it have a secret wall like the Staff Station? Are we going to see who left the Bible, the Swan Station Orientation edits, and the glass eye? Was it Razinsky? What was he doing there and why did he leave an eye??
Marvin Candle – Who is this guy? Was he DHARMA’s lead scientist? And what’s with all his aliases? I hope we learn more about him. It would be great if he was a supporting character for a few episodes.
The Frozen Donkey Wheel – Okay, I read this theory and I’m adopting it. I wanted to know how a crank could move an island. Well, I read somewhere (I forget now) that sort of crank is similar to the types old ships use to hoist up anchors. What if the crank was used to lift a giant plug that contained the island’s exotic matter. This matter could flow through under the island like lava. Speaking of volcanos.
Volcanos – Another part of Ben’s flashback (“The Man Behind the Curtain”) we see young Ben inside a classroom when the Hostiles attack – the teacher (played by hottie Samantha Mathis) gives a lesson in volcanic activity on the island. Can we say foreshadowing? I’m surprised this didn’t get addressed in Season 4. Hopefully we’ll see some hot magma action in this season – if not, then Season 6 to be sure. The entire series might end with the island exploding in a lava burst. This also might explain how the island disappeared. If the island can move through time, then maybe at some point, the island sank. This state of the island got transferred to current time by Ben moving the donkey wheel. Ja?
Danielle Rousseau – Yeah, she’s dead – but if we’re going to be moving back and forth through time, we’re going to see her origins on the island, and how she snuffed out her team and maybe how Ben stole Alex. Frankly, I’m disappointed on how quickly they killed off her, Alex, and Karl. Maybe this will shed some light on her past.
Annie – Ben’s childhood girlfriend. I’m sure she is crucial in the development of Ben’s psycho behavior. My theory is they got married and she was the first to die in childbirth, prompting Ben to kidnap Alex from Rousseau later on. Of course, Annie probably looks like Juliet, who in turn, looks just like Sarah, Jack’s ex-wife. It would be a hoot if the same actress that plays Sarah, also plays Annie.
Adam and Eve – Remember these corpses from the caves of Season 1 discovered by Jack? Now, more than ever, I believe that they are Jack and Kate – trapped in time, doomed to live on the island. Jack is still the owner of the black and white stones found on the bodies. It’s either them or Aaron and Ji-Yeon (Sun and Jin’s daughter).
More to come – although we have exactly two weeks until the two hour premiere of Lost on January 21…
Okay, there is about a month to go before Season 5 of Lost airs. I foolishly forewent buying Season 4 on DVD and instead asked for it for Christmas/Birthday. So now I will possibly have to wait a week for that. I think I’ve managed the between-season hiatus fairly well, but now it’s getting closer and it’s been on my mind a lot. I do have last season on my iTunes and DVR (Cox Cable are bastards for providing a shitty DVR that cuts off the last few minutes of a show, by the way). I spent a lazy Saturday last week watching the short season 4, and have seen both sneak-peeks of the season 5 premiere episode. As usual, here are my predictions of what’s going to happen as well as a revisitation of my previous season predictions:
The Whispers – since time travel has been established (in various forms), I’m starting to believe that the whispers on the island are from the lostaways themselves – maybe when the island moved some of them became “stuck out of time” and revisit key events from the earlier seasons. Time travel has manifested itself mostly in Desmond – and only through consciousness. Perhaps another form of travel will be explored where the traveler views previous events outside of themselves – only their voices or thoughts can be heard.
Ghosts/Spirits – The only other answer to the whispers I can think of is my idea of how ghosts on the island operate. Charlie (and other dead people) appearing to Hurley last season confirm either insanity or ghosts. These are people who have died without a chance to send their consciousness around in time, so the time traveler theory is out. Then Christian Shepard is not only materializing to Jack, but to Locke and Claire. Since Locke has never met Christian in real life, it is impossible to be a part of Locke’s psyche, not to mention Claire was there, too. So the question now is, are these spirits really the people they appear as, or are they other forces? This question is only further confused by the several appearances of Walt. Has Walt consciously appeared before Locke, Shannon, and Sayid numerous times – or was it another “thing” that just assumed Walt’s form?
The Oceanic Six – This has me intrigued. When Ben says everyone has to go back, does that mean not only the Oceanic Six, but Desmond, Walt, Frank and anybody else that got off the island as well? I’m pretty sure that that the Oceanic Six do return to the island (although *when* is a question). Personally, I’d like for Walt to return. Taller Walt.
Jacob – I’m a little pissed that they totally avoided answering who or what Jacob is. Jacob does bear the qualities of the other spirits on the island. Perhaps he is the first. Or maybe he is Jack grandfather. Who knows.
The Smoke Monster – After Alex was snuffed out, we were treated to a scene where Ben supposedly calls upon the smoke monster to attack Keamy’s men. There is a question about whether Ben actually controls the smoke monster. I’m not sure. I think the real question (and a question that no one has yet brought up) is what is the secret room doing in Ben’s house? Let me explain. That house was a Dharma house before Ben moved in. It was built long before Ben arrived on the island. I assume that the secret room was there long before Dharma. So wouldn’t that mean that Dharma built the house around the room with knowledge that it related to the smoke monster? And if they did know about it, why build the sonic fence?
The Others – Okay, the others aren’t the DHARMA initiative. But are they the “natives” of the island? The only real Other we know, is Richard. Is Richard older than dirt? Is he of the island? I’ve given this some thought. Richard is very smart. We’ve also seen that he appeared in Locke’s childhood at various points. He’s mysterious to be sure, but I think some things can be explained. One, I think that Richard isn’t very old, but merely has mastered the island’s time traveling qualities. Two, if DHARMA is was Hanso’s pet project, and Widmore has his own companies, but who owns Mittelos and how is it the Others have companies off the island? This is starting to sound like three Titans fighting. Dharma lost their battle. The Others are losing their battle. Who is the real leader of the Others.

Sayid
Secret ninja skills to the max! Like Sayid, you’ve got a whole bunch of talent packed into that body! Hopefully, it falls more on the building-radios side than on the torturing-political-prisoners side. You’ve also got a lot of heart; you interact well with other people, and you’re actually really caring. Who’d have thought?
Wow, it’s been a long-ass time since I wrote in my Lost blog. I thought this was news worthy, ABC has released their Lost season five poster. I think it tells us what to expect in season five. It’s also interesting that they’ve included the new season four characters as important main characters (go Faraday!). It also has a weird “Light” and “Dark” quality about it. Hmm….
