Dead Shaun of the Dead

Monday, August 11th, 2008

I finally found a nearby art supply store! It’s in the same strip mall that my grocery store is at. I always thought it was a framing store. It was like walking in a slice of heaven. I bought a compact drawing board and more white charcoal pencils. I’m not digging on the paper I bought from Dick Blick. It’s too rough for my tastes. I’m going to stick with the kraft paper more; it’s smoother and I can cut it to any size I fancy.

Here’s a quick sketch of Shaun from Shaun of the Dead. It’s a little too rough, but I did it while watching the movie. I bought Spaced more than a week ago and finally finished both seasons, so I’ll be posting a review of that later.

Just got my white and black charcoal pencils in yesterday. I found a roll of kraft paper at the drug store for like two bucks. More later…

Izzard Sketch

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

I just ordered some charcoal and white pencils and brown paper - I’m going to start making some of these without photoshop. This was done in a tiny cheap sketchbook I got from Barnes and Noble (bastards), but added the white and paper texture in photoshop.

Rough Sketch

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

I did a sketch in a cheap sketchbook using a #2 pencil - the paper was rough. I took it into photoshop and added a paper texture to the background and added white. Interesting technique. I need to get some colored paper and some white china pencils and try this out, analog-style…

*UPDATE*
This is another sketch I did - on the same paper, with the same technique - except I used some color.

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

Here’s my concept of the poster I’m going to do. It’s real rough but the idea is there.

Thundarr Quick Sketch

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

Just a quick sketch I hammered out in SketchBook. I’m going to try a traditional illustration of Thundarr and crew with gouache as soon as I get my hands on some. Maybe I’ll try a movie poster style thing with some heroic poses…

I found a nifty way of removing the blue lines. This one is a bit overworked.

Drawing Real People

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

I’ve been on a drawing kick lately, working with photos of people. I’ve really trying to learn proper proportions as well as hone my style and pick up new techniques. I’ve bought two books by Matt Busch, You Can Draw Star Wars, and Pucker: Art of Matt Busch - both display his techniques from working from photos. I really admire his pencil work though, and I’ll need to get to that point before I feel comfortable inking/painting.
